WCNT Volunteers

Overview

The Wellington Community Net Trust (WCNT) provides web hosting services for non profit and community entities within the Wellington region and aims to enhance and promote social, cultural and economical aspects of community life in Wellington.

At the heart of a community is its volunteers.

WCNT is looking for volunteers to help run Wellington Community Net.

Read the descriptions for the WCN volunteer positions below. If you have the required skills, we want to hear from you.

Before appointing a volunteer to a position the trustees will meet the applicant and determine the best way each individual can contribute to the success of WCN. All volunteers will have to complete a volunteer agreement setting out the Trust's and the individual's expectations. (sample Volunteer Agreement)

WCN Volunteer Positions Available

WCN Registrar

(2 positions vacant)

A WCN Registrar is responsible for WCN account registration and account management.

A background in a help desk environment is preferable. Training help desk tools on the WCN system will be provided.

A WCN Registrar:

  • processes requests for user accounts
  • activates and deactivates user accounts
  • is the point of contact for the web host user relating to WCN account enquiries
  • verifies that the account query or request comes from an authorised user
  • verifies that WCNT has the correct, up-to-date, contact information for the user
  • reports to the Volunteer Coordinator (a WCNT Trustee)
  • receives technical assistance from the WCN Web Host Manager.

A WCN Registrar:

  • posesses good analytical skills
  • posesses a customer focus
  • has excellent written and oral communication skills
  • pays attention to detail
  • pays attention to security of information

The required service levels of a WCN Registrar are:

  • an initial response to queries within 2 days
  • to resolve minor hosting issues (non service affecting) within one month
  • to resolve major hosting issues (service affecting) within one week
  • to resolve critical issues (server down) ASAP or escalate to the Web Host Manager.

 

Help Desk Personnel

(positions available to suitable candidates)

Help Desk personnel are a WCN information and assistance resource.
Help Desk personnel troubleshoot user problems and use the WCN issues tracking system.

Experience with CPanel and in a help desk environment is preferable.
Training on the WCN system will be provided.
HTML and at least basic programming skills are prerequisites.

Help Desk personnel:

  • are contact points for the web host user
  • own the help desk problem
  • report to the Volunteers Coordinator (a WCNT Trustee)
  • receive technical assistance from the Web Host Manager

A Help Desk person possesses:

  • good analytical skills
  • a customer focus
  • excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • pays attention to detail
  • pays attention to security of information

The required service levels for the Help Desk are:

  • initial response to queries within 2 days
  • to resolve minor faults (non service affecting) within one month
  • to resolve major faults (service affecting) within one week
  • to resolve critical faults (server down) ASAP or escalate to the Web Host Manager.

 

Website Designers

(voluntary or contractor)

WCN Website Designers design and build web sites for WCN users
The required site may be a static or dynamic site.
The web designer may assist organisations by creating templates for WCN approved Content Management Systems eg: Joomla, Drupal, Wordpress etc.
3rd party extensions, add-ons, plugins may need to be installed.
The web designer may also assist organisations with developing clear site navigation and efficient information organisation (site structure).

Website design is a multi discipline occupation. A background in web scripting, graphics, web page layout, and web user interface is preferred.

Experience in the use of HTML and CSS is essential.
Experience in the use of Joomla, PHP, MySQL and Javascript is preferred.
A good understanding of graphic design techniques and accessibility issues are also desired.
W3C validation is also preferred.

A Website Designer:

  • is referred or advertised to a WCN user by the WCN
  • has direct contact with the user
  • is answerable to the WCN Trustees
  • receives technical assistance from the Web Host Manager

The Website Designer possesses:

  • referrals and a portfolio of recent examples of websites built.
  • excellent communication skills
  • a customer focus
  • an awareness of financial issues affecting not-for-profit organisations

Payment or non payment details is a matter between the Web Designer and the WCN user.

WCNT will not get involved in any disputes over payment between the Web Designer and the WCN user.
